Meaning
Secured storage facilities approved by customs authorities where imported goods are held without payment of duty until they are withdrawn for domestic consumption. Storage under bonded warehouse storage conditions allows importers to defer taxes and customs duties while maintaining physical control over raw materials or finished goods. This deferral continues until the goods enter the domestic market.
Customs Clearance
Import procedures dictate the entry of items into these specialized facilities. When goods arrive, they are logged under bond, meaning the warehouse operator assumes liability for the unpaid duty through a surety bond. No taxes are paid during this phase of storage.
If the goods are re-exported directly from the facility, no domestic duties are ever assessed.
Capital Efficiency
Deferring customs obligations improves cash management during the pre-assembly phase of manufacturing. Importers avoid tying up working capital in tax payments for inventory that might remain on shelves for months. This becomes especially useful for seasonal production cycles.
Operational Limit
Storage cannot continue indefinitely because jurisdictions impose a maximum time limit. Most countries enforce a boundary of several years, after which the goods must be either cleared or destroyed. This time constraint prevents long-term abandonment of tax-exempt inventory.
