Meaning
Financial transfer process where a borrower sends principal and interest payments in foreign currency to an overseas lender. Successful debt service remittance requires the borrower to demonstrate that the underlying loan was properly registered with the exchange authorities. This process involves the conversion of local profits into the currency of the debt.
It is the final stage of an international credit transaction.
Payment Sequence
Contractual obligations dictate the order in which funds are distributed to the creditor. In a typical debt service remittance, interest is paid first followed by the scheduled principal installment. Banks verify these amounts against the amortization table attached to the registered loan agreement.
Currency Availability
Access to foreign exchange depends on the current liquidity in the local banking system. A company must request the debt service remittance several days in advance to allow the bank to source the necessary currency. If the market is tight, the central bank might prioritize these payments over ordinary trade invoices.
Transfer Approval
Regulatory clearance ensures that the outflow matches the legal tax and debt filings. The bank checks the debt service remittance against the foreign debt registration certificate to prevent unauthorized capital flight. Once approved, the funds are wired via the international clearing system.
