Meaning
Financial compensation clauses protect owners against the excessive waste of expensive raw materials during the fabrication process. Under a material loss indemnity, the fabricator agrees to reimburse the purchaser for every gram or millimetre of input that exceeds a predetermined scrap allowance. This mechanism shifts the risk of poor craftsmanship or machine error away from the buyer.
Contractual Protection
Liability limits define the point where the cost of waste transitions from a shared production risk to a sole provider expense. A typical material loss indemnity is triggered only after the total scrap volume passes a specific percentage of the total weight shipped to the plant. Because the buyer pays for the metal, any loss beyond the design intent represents a direct reduction in the return on investment.
Settlement Method
Reconciliation occurs through the issuance of a credit note or a direct reduction in the final invoice amount for processing services. When a project concludes, the party in charge of manufacturing provides a full tally of finished parts and remaining scrap. If the numbers show that material loss indemnity rules have been violated, the cash value is calculated based on the original procurement price of the stock.
This ensures the buyer is made whole for the raw cost of the destroyed assets.
Verification Requirement
Accurate weighing of offcuts and chips provides the evidence needed to support a claim for repayment. Documentation must prove that the waste came from the specific lot provided rather than general workshop binning. Both parties usually sign off on the scrap logs weekly.
