Meaning
Fluid behavior where the viscosity decreases as the speed of flow increases is a standard trait in many industrial polymers. This shear rate thinning allows thick liquids to move through pipes and nozzles with less pressure than expected. When the stress is removed, the material returns to its thick state.
This property is essential for paints and coatings that must flow from a brush but not drip off a wall.
Flow Resistance
Internal friction within the liquid drops when the molecules align with the direction of movement. In shear rate thinning, the energy required to maintain flow does not rise linearly with velocity. This efficiency reduces the power needed for large pumps in chemical plants.
Polymer Structure
Molecular chains untangle and slide past each other more easily under high force. The intensity of shear rate thinning depends on the length and branching of the chemical strands. Engineers select materials based on how they behave inside a molding machine.
Process Limit
Viscosity stabilizes once the molecules have reached maximum alignment. Beyond this point, shear rate thinning no longer provides a benefit to the throughput. Understanding this boundary prevents the overheating of sensitive fluids during high speed mixing.
